CASM is building upon years of successful satellite technology development at Utah State
University and using new manufacturing techniques, including ultrasonic consolidation
and direct write technologies, to manufacture satellites more efficiently and cost effectively. The CASM approach involves using design principles to develop manufacturable
platform designs, which can subsequently be fabricated using direct additive manufacturing. This method of satellite production has many benefits
including: All-metal honeycomb-type structures without adhesives and
tedious assembly, embedded thermal control, sensors, and electronics,
integration of direct write materials such as insulators, circuitry,
capacitors, antennas, and batteries onto freeform surfaces,
multimaterial structures and metal matrix composites, and finally
digital reconfiguration for responsive space.
